January 31, 2001 Released in the late spring of 1998 the original PowerBook G3/233 fell with a great big thump! This low-end version of the 'WallStreet' line of PowerBooks sported the spiffy, and relatively new G3 processor but lacked the backside cache found on other machines. In fact it lacked any form of L2 cache whatsoever! This severely hampered the performance of the machine making it only 30% faster than the PowerBook 3400/240, a machine produced two generations earlier. This step backwards was rectified a short 4 months later by an updated PowerBook G3/233 which had the desirable Backside cache installed. The updated G3/233 was a full 50% faster in processing power over the cache-less version. On the positive side the machine had a sleek new design and came with either a 12.1" color dual-scan passive matrix screen capable of 16-bit color at 800x600 resolution, a 13.3" active matrix screen capable of 24-bit color at 1024x768 resolution or a 14.1 active matrix screen also capable of 24-bit color at 1024x768 resolution. Standard hard drive was 2 GB and the machines came with 32 MB of RAM installed. Maximum RAM capacity was 192 MB. Two expansion bays allow you add additional removable drives or to utilize a second battery giving your PowerBook a use range of from 5 - 6.5 hours (a single battery will power the G3/233 for approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours). This PowerBook has 2 PC slots which can accommodate two type II PC cards or one type III. SCSI and S-video output connectors are found on the back of the case and the machine has an internal 56K modem. The PowerBook G3/233 weighs in at a arm stretching 7.2 to 7.6 pounds .
Below you will find the MacBench 5.0 results for the current processor upgrades available for this machine. Results marked in blue indicate that benchmark results were done by us. All other processor card results were provided by the upgrade manufacturer. The bar graphs below express results as a percentage of improvement over the base machine, which receives a score of 100%. Further down the page you will find a table with the actual MacBench score. |
