The Umax C500 represented the low end of Umax's lineup. The "C" series also included the C600 tower computers which offered an additional PCI slot as well as four free internal drive bays. Other offerings from Umax included the higher powered "J" and "S" series. The C500/200 was fourth in a series of five C500's starting with a 140MHz model and ending with the 240MHz. These computers were released in rapid succession and it seemed that as soon as you read a review of one model it was no longer available since Umax had released a successor. With the C500/200, Umax continued its strategy of offering three slightly different models. The C500/200LT was the bargain basement model and continued to use the slower 8X CD-ROM drive found in earlier C500's, whereas the C500e and C500i got a bump up to 12x drive. The C500/200LT also lacked both modem and Ethernet. The C500/200e offered Ethernet via one of the 2 available PCI slots. The C500/200i came bundled with a 33.6k external modem. Either option added $100 to the cost of the plain C500LT. All C500's came with an excellent SOHO software bundle which included; Grollier's Encyclopedia, Claris Works, Quicken, Now Utilities, Conflict Catcher, TechTool and Adobe's Page Mill to name a few.

As with previous C500's the 1MB of logic board VRAM cannot be upgraded making use of larger monitors or higher resolutions problematic. On the positive side, the L2 Cache was upgradeable to either 512k or 1MB with offerings available from several vendors. Umax also offered processor upgrades and a CacheDoubler card that fit into the (then) revolutionary processor ZIF slot.
