Product Watch: Symantec Gives Mac Users The Works!

Norton System Works 1.0
12-12-00
Most Mac users are familiar with Symantec's two utilities for the Mac, Norton Utilities and Norton Antivirus. Symantec announced updates to both programs a while back along with a new suite dubbed Norton System Works that includes both programs and a couple of other utilities to round out the package.

Norton AntiVirus 7.0 can now scan and repair files on an OS X beta disk although the NAV application itself must be run from an OS 9 partition or (less desirable) the NAV CD itself. NAV 7.0 sports a simplified preference setup with options for minimal, standard, full or no protection. Users that want to fine tune individual settings still have the option to do so. NAV 7.0 can also scan e-mail attachments for viruses and, as before, features "live update" for downloading current virus definitions. The first year of updates is free. After that, you will need to purchase additional updates.

Norton Utilities 6.0 also sports a number of improvements. Users can now create their own custom optimization profiles for SpeedDisk or use ones created by others. Most, but not all of Norton Utilities features can be run on an OS X beta disk but, like NAV, you must run the program from an OS 9 partition or the Norton CD. The volume recovery will now scavenge old directories and rebuild the catalogue tree to aid in the data recovery process, even if the user has not been running FileSaver.

Spring Cleaning from Aladdin, is a suite of utilities designed to help remove the dust bunnies from your hard drive. Some of Spring Cleaning's key features include: scanning for orphaned preference files and aliases, removing duplicate applications (how many copies of SimpleText do you really need?), removing empty folders, and "iClean", for removing cookies, cache files, and history files left behind by your web browser.

Retrospect Express by Dantz lets you copy files quickly and easily to a wide range of removable media, including CD-R, CD-R/RW, Zip, Jaz, SuperDisk, magneto-optical, and DVD devices You can also back up to a secure site over the Internet.
