Product Watch: Share Your Internet
Connection Without Shelling Out For A Router.
View, CA, March 22, 2000 - Vicomsoft announced SurfDoubler version 6.6.
For those of you not familiar with SurfDoubler, it is a product that
allows 2 or (optionally) 3 users to simultaneously share one Internet
connection and account. SurfDoubler will definitely appeal to people
wanting to share high bandwidth connections like DSL or cable modems,
but even those of you with dial up can put it to good use. Considering
the amount of "idle time" involved in typical web surfing
(load page, read page) sharing a 56k connection is not impractical.
In its most basic form, SurfDoubler provides you with the following
- To separate your local area network (LAN) traffic from prying eyes
on the Internet.
Server - Serves up IP addresses on the fly to machines on your
LAN. Eliminates the need to manually configure each computer. Two
computers can be online at the same time although multiple computers
can be setup to use SurfDoubler. Computers are simply served on a
first come first served basis.
Caching - When you enter a domain name like http://macspeedzone.com
in your browser, it must be translated to an IP address like 184.108.40.206
before the connection is made. Typically, your ISP will assign you
one or more "DNS server" addresses. SurfDoubler keeps a
local log of visited domain names and their corresponding IP addresses
eliminating the trip to an external DNS server.
- Connection Support - SurfDoubler supports a wide variety
of Internet connections including: dial-up modem, cable modem, DSL
- Support for Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE)
- A protocol being adopted by DSL providers which allows for login
functions on DSL accounts.
Add on Modules
With the introduction of version 6.6, SurfDoubler has moved to a modular,
or to use Apple's vernacular, build to order approach. This allows you
to pick just the additional features you need and skip the ones you
don't. Additional modules include:
Teaming - Allows you to add additional supported connections (see
above) on a mix and match basis. Extra connections can be initiated
and dropped as needed and can be to the same or differing ISPs. You
can define the order in which connections are initiated as well as assign
services (mail, web, news etc.) to individual connections/ISPs
Parental Controls - Allows parents or administrators to selectively
restrict access. Access can be restricted by time of day and/or total
time allowed. Access to specific site and services (FTP, news, mail
etc.) can also be restricted. Support for CyberNot content filtering
is also part of this module.
