Product Watch: Never Again Miss An Important Phone Call While You're Online

USB 56K Call Waiting Modem

ActionTec's USB 56K Call Waiting Modem brings the unique ability to both surf online and yet not miss a single phone call - with only one phone line. The Call Waiting feature of the modem allows you to screen incoming calls without interrupting your online connection. It does this by using the Call Waiting Service available on most telephone systems. When you are online the modem constantly monitors the phone line for incoming calls. When a call comes in the modem will ring. You then have the choice of ignoring the call, or picking up the phone to see who is calling. If you pick up the phone you then have two additional choices to make; identify who is calling and hang up the phone,to continue using the Internet (you have approximately 7 seconds to do this before you will be disconnected - so you had better be quick), or stay on the line and your Internet connection will be disconnected and you can carry on a conversation. In either case you will not remain oblivious to whether you missed any calls while you were online. If you choose to ignore the call and you have voicemail provided by your phone company, the call will be routed to your voice mailbox.

The modem is USB hotpluggable and can be used on either Macs or PCs. It also draws its power from the USB port so that's one less cord you have to plug into your surge protector.

The modem is based on the Lucent USB-compliant chip set and can communicate at V.90/K56flex standards. It automatically adjusts speed to deal with line conditions to reduce errors (the cleaner the line the faster the modem will go). In fax mode the modem communicates at 14,400 bps.

Voice and fax communication software is included with the modem.

A recent MacHome review gave the USB 56K Call Waiting Modem 4 apples out of a possible 5 and said this:

"ActiontecĂs Call Waiting modem is cool because it negates the need for a second phone line just to receive calls, while maintaining your Internet connection. The catch is that you can only take about seven seconds to deal with said incoming calls while youĂre still connected to the Net."
