Product Watch: New Mac Instant Messaging Software Allows For Cross-Platform Communication
MacPopUp from Kanex Group Inc. is a program that allows Mac users to exchange instant messages with other users on any local area network (LAN) with TCP/IP service. Not only can you exchange messages with other Mac users, but messages can also be sent to Windows 95/98/NT, Linux and other Unix users. It is compatible with Microsoft's WinPopUp messaging application. You can send any text message to individuals users or to a group of people in real time. The program will automatically find all users on a network - so you don't need to enter a users name manually. The software is self-standing and does not require any software to be installed on the server - you simple install the program and start firing off messages.
MacPopUp is compatible with Apple Text-to-Speech and you can leave the programing running in the background while you continue working, and it will read out each message as it arrives. It is also Speech Recognition savvy and will respond to more than 25 speech commands.
It supports Apple's oft ignored Internet Address Detectors. IAD can recognize addresses for e-mail, WWW, FTP, newsgroups and remote host addresses. You can send any of these addresses to a MacPopUp user and it will arrive as a clickable link.
Applescript support is also built into the program so you can add functionality to the program by applying different scripts. The program ships with three stock scripts to get you started.
There is also a chat mode that allows for interactive dialogues over your LAN.
MacPopUp MSRP: $25 Single User. Substantial discounts for muti-licence users.
