The Performance Edge: So Newer Has Dropped The Prices Of Their Upgrade Cards Again - What's New? Why The Price/Performance Equation Of Course!

NewerTech has dropped the prices up to $100 on many of their processor upgrade cards. In addition they have added two G4 cards to their line-up (due in December) So we run the numbers again for you. For applications that have been optimized for the G4 processor you can see a performance boost of 3 to 5 times over that of the G3 at the same clock speed. However for most of today's applications similarly clocked G4 and G3 processors will perform pretty much the same. The G4 is somewhat faster at floating point calculations than the G3 - giving a boost to some scientific and graphics intensive programs. The coming year should bring more programs that take advantage of the G4's extra processing power.

Newer also announced that they will be dropping the line of MAXpowr G3-CC "Carrier Card" product due to lack of demand.

Below we explore what performance gain you will see with these cards installed in the machines they are intended for. We also take a comparative look at the price/performance equation of each card.

MAXpowr SmartSet ensures that MAXpowr processor upgrade installations require no
user input and also that the user cannot select a setting which results in a configuration
where the Mac cannot boot. SmartSet also ensures that users are not required to make a
choice that could use settings that are out of spec with the rated capability of the Mac,
including DRAM and VRAM memory timing and CPU clock speed. MAXpowr
Compatibility Circuitry (patent-pending) correctly manages, not just bandages, speculative
accesses so customers can continue to use popular third party hardware and software such
as Adaptec SCSI cards and Dantz Retrospect backup software while receiving the
 performance benefits of speculative access.

MAXpowr G4 products will be shipping to dealers beginning in December. The
MAXpowr G4 ZIF 400MHz upgrade (previously announced) for PowerMac G3 beige
and blue/white systems should sell for $799.
