The new Towers are of note because they sport dual processors.
If they were single processor machines, their appeal would
be .... well half of what they are.
Even the new top-end 1.25 GHz is only a modest speed bump
over the previous generation's Dual 1 GHz Tower in raw clock-speed.
No it is really the fact that Apple has put dual processors
in each of the Towers that make them shine ... especially
the mid and low-end models. If you are running OS 9 you really
won't see that much benefit from dual processor, unless you
are running specific applications that take advantage of a
dual processor system .... some filters in Photoshop for example.
However under OS X it is a whole different ball game. Since
OS X allows for advanced multitasking, application processes
can be split across multiple processors. Applications still
have to be written to do this, but it is easier for application
developers to bring their products up to speed. More and more
OS X applications and games are showing up exclaiming they
are ready for a menage a trois (one software app and two chips).
Even in the case where an application itself does not lend
itself to be split across dual processors, the OS will send
the application off to one processor leaving you with one
processor free for other work.
That brings us to a final point on these new Towers. They
are really powerful machines. From a purely utilitarian standpoint,
all that power is not exactly necessary for everyone. In most
of our testing about 50% of the processing power of each Tower
was left on the floor waiting for a dance partner ... even
during our most demanding tests. The Towers are really designed
for production type work, and work they will. This doesn't
mean that if you are not in production type situation you
shouldn't get one. Applications may move forward to take advantage
of all that processing power. But if you are sitting on the
fence, and you have more modest computing needs, you may want
to consider one of Apple's consumer models.
All the machines tested below were running some variant of
OS 9. We have results for some of the machines when running
OS X on a different
page, and will be adding more on an on-going basis. All
the scores below, with the exception of the Quake scores and
the CineBench, are in seconds. Therefore smaller numbers means
better performance. CineBench scores are in points, and higher
numbers are better. Quake III scores are in frames per second,
and likewise higher frame rates translates into better performance.

An Explanation Of The Tests
Folder Copy - A folder of approximately 1,000 files
of various sizes and weighing in at 60 MB, is duplicated
on the desktop
File Copy - A single file, 128
MB in size, is duplicated on the desktop
AppleWorks Scroll - A 1.5 MB
file is scrolled from the top to the bottom
Search & Replace - A search
and replace on a single word is performed on a 1.5 MB document
Code Analysis - Analog
is used to analyze a 18 MB Web log file
Quake III Fastest - Quake
is set to the fastest setting, demo1 is run, and the average
frame rates recorded
Quake III High Quality - Quake
is set to the highest quality setting, demo1 is run, and
the average frame rates recorded
CineBench 2000 Ray Tracing -
The Ray
Tracing test of CineBench takes good advantage of dual
processors, but does not take advantage of the special performance
enhancements of the G4 processor (AltiVec).
CineBench 2000 Shading - This test records the
graphics performance of the machine in both 4D and GL. The
two scores are then averaged
iTunes MP3 Encode - A single song is encoded as
a MP3 file, from a CD using iTunes
QuickTime Sorenson Encode - A Sorenson
compression is run on a 5 MB file. Sorenson takes good advantage
of the G4 processor's AltiVec instructions, but this version
does not take advantage of dual processors
StuffIt Expansion - A 4.5 MB compressed file is
decompressed
Photoshop Launch - Photoshop 6 is launched using
a 20 MB graphics file
Photoshop AltiVec Functions - A series of Photoshop
Actions including filters and other functions that take
advantage of the special performance enhancements of the
G4
processor, are performed on a 20 MB file
Photoshop Non-AltiVec Functions - A series of Photoshop
Actions including filters and other functions that do not
take advantage of the special performance enhancements of
the G4 processor, are performed on a 20 MB file
BareFeat's Photoshop Test Suite - BareFeats
suite of 20 Photoshop Actions that mimic the typical workflow
of a graphics artist
Reboot - Time between the appearance of the 'Happy
Mac' to the loading of the desktop
Burn CD - A single song is burned from the hard
drive to a blank CD using the Mac OS's
built in burning capability
HandHelditems.com - Personalize your iPod with us. Shop hundreds of unique iPod accessories and save up to 80%.
