Now Available In Regular And Super Size! MacSpeedZone's January, 2002 iBook Information Page

1-7-02
There is no doubt that the all new iMac was the star of the 2002 Macworld SF expo, but it would be a mistake to overlook the new iBook. Only one new model was introduced, with the rest of the iBook line undergoing minor configuration and price changes. The completely new iBook sports a 14.1" screen, G3/600 processor and combination (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) drive. The 14.1" iBook (for lack of a better name) carries a $1,700 price tag.

The 14.1" iBook, as you would expect, is a little heftier than its 12.1" counterparts, 5.9 lbs. as opposed to 4.9 lbs. The footprint is also larger to accommodate the new screen, 12.7" x 10.2" x 1.35" compared to 11.2" x  9.06" x 1.35". Even though the screen is larger, you don't actually gain any real estate as the resolution is the same as the 12.1" iBooks, 1024 x 768.

On the plus side, you get a longer battery life, with Apple claiming 6 hours on the 14.1" iBook and 5 hours on the 12.1" models. Although the 14.1" and 12.1" iBooks both sport combination drives, the mechanism used in the 14.1" iBook offers faster CD write and DVD read speeds. Both read CD's at 24x, a standard speed for laptops. Check out the specs section of this page for the specifics.

The rest of the iBook line is mostly the same. The DVD-ROM iBook was downgraded from a G3/600 to a G3/500 and received a $200 price cut, bringing it down to $1,299. It has also been retired from the mainstream and relegated to "custom built" status at the Apple Store.

The G3/500 CD-ROM iBook has dropped $100 (Apple was previously offering a $100 rebate on all iBooks) to $1,199, the G3/600 Combination drive model (with 12.1" screen) received an even more impressive $200 price cut bringing it to $1,499. The other big announcement out of the expo was that all new machines from Apple will ship with OS X as the boot operating system. Users can still opt to switch back to OS 9 for their boot OS, but this still represents a major step for Apple and a Major commitment to moving forward with the new OS.

The table below outlines the major differences in the most recent generations of iBook. We will add reviews, including our own, as they become available. If you are in the market for a new iBook, be sure to visit MacReviewZone's buyer's guide for the January 2002 iBooks. This guide tracks low prices, bundles and availability and is updated every Thursday. You can discuss the new iBooks with other Mac users on our iBook discussion thread.
