Laptops: classroom asset or disruption? - Despite the wider integration of technology, Western Illinois University students still have mixed feelings on laptop use in classrooms. Most students can see the advantages and disadvantages of replacing pen and paper.
Summit students jump into technology with iBooks - When technology troubles arise at Summit Middle School, teachers can count on a group of students to save the day. Apple signs 'widescreen iBook' contract - The news that Apple may be preparing widescreen iBooks plays to recent suggestions that the company will shortly begin branding certain consumer and high-end notebook and desktop Macs as HD models, the better to link the products to the emerging HD video market. Quanta secures iBook orders from Apple - Asustek has also received orders for a new model, the 15.4-inch iBook, which will be launched in 2006, plus follow-up orders for the 12.1-inch iBook and 12.1-inch PowerBook, the sources said. What If Every Kid Had a Computer? - Today, we can do much the same thing for children by giving them their own simple tool: a $100 laptop. It's a goal that's closer then you might think. The MIT Media Lab is working with partners including AMD, Google, and News Corp. to have such a computer ready for shipment by the end of 2006 Maximize lifespan of Mac's battery - Apple Computer does not recommend leaving the PowerBook plugged in all the time with its lithiumion battery connected because the internal chemistry can stagnate, which may shorten battery life. Unplugging the laptop and working from the battery once a month or so helps to discharge the stored energy and gets those electrons moving. Apple iBook, mini review - One of the things that impressed the hell out of me, right off the bat with my new iBook was how it handled Wi-Fi. Our office has a Linksys wireless B router, in an adjacent closet. That router and my now retired Vaio laptop never seemed to make friends and play nice, whereas the iBook immediately grabbed the signal and never let go. PowerBook, iBook top U.K. consumer magazine - The PowerBook 15" was the best "desktop replacement," and it "tore through our tasks, burning a CD of MP3 files in just over four minutes." The 14" iBook was the highest ranked "entry level" laptop. Laptop Listening - Laptop USB speaker systems compared - Although we focus most of our portable speaker review energy on systems specifically designed for iPods, over the past few months we’ve received a number of portable systems—powered by USB—intended for use mainly with laptops. These systems either can’t be used with an iPod or other portable audio player, or accommodate such sources only as a secondary option; their true calling is to connect to your laptop to provide sweet relief from the crummy, tinny excuses for speakers found therein Laptops making a presence on campus - "It's my baby. It's perfect. I carry it in my backpack all the time," said Titolo, a senior from West Lafayette, Ind. "It weighs less than a textbook and does a whole lot more for me." When educators describe the K-12 student of today, they invariably use phrases like “digital natives” and “visual learners.” - “Our kids are so visual, and the Mac environment mastered the ‘visual learning’ piece of it right from the beginning,” observes Liles. “Now, with Mac OS X and the iLife suite, we have tools that are perfect for visual learners. Our high school kids are creating amazing digital graphics and video to demonstrate their understanding of curriculum concepts and subject matter Notebooks squeeze juice out of fuel cells - Though a number of companies have shown off fuel cells for cell phones and MP3 players, a company out of New Jersey says it has come up with one that can power a notebook. Review: Cobra.XM Laptop Case - “If you’re upper management, this bag is probably too ‘hip’ for you, with its range of stylish colors and suit-wrinkling one-shoulder design. Besides, you wanted black leather, right?” If the standard black leather case is just too stuffy for you, but you still have to fit in at the office, Booq’s ballistic nylon Cobra.XM is your bag. Its understated style is subtle enough to blend in, but different enough to give you a sense of individuality in a sea of suits, ties, and PHBs that would make Dilbert cry. As a bonus, it comes with a nice shoulder strap should you find yourself wanting some extra support for your workload on Casual Fridays NewerTech iBook G3 iBook replacement battery - Review - Apple's original clamshell (or "toilet seat") G3 iBooks are great portable computers. They scream in OS 9 and they work in OS X without any serious difficulties. But their replacement batteries were expensive and not easy to locate. Until now
Apple changes Ts&Cs on iBook logic boards - We were alerted by a tip-off that the UK page on the support website, here, was updated on the 7th of February. The change means that users who previously would have had the cost of the repair covered totally by Apple will now have to pay shipping and handling both ways, or take the computer into an Apple Authorised Service Provider
What Will The Next Generation iBooks Be Like? - While the level of interest and speculation about the thus-far vaporous G5 PowerBook shows no sign of abating, there has been surprisingly little conjecture about what might be forthcoming with the next generation of iBooks. I find this a bit curious, because while the current crop of PowerBooks are now a definitely a mature product, the iBook is nearly twice as mature as the 12” and 17” and PowerBook models--the current form factor dating back to May, 2001. The 15” PowerBook is a relative stripling of only 18 months
TMO Reports - Consumer Reports: Mac Laptops Have Fewest Repairs; Best Tech Support - As for technical support for laptops, Apple got a readers score of 84, making it the highest of any PC manufacturer. It received a 'better' ranking in problem solving by phone technical support, the shortest time waiting on the phone, knowledgeable phone staff and Web-based support. In second was IBM with a score of 69.
NAMM: SF band replaces drums with two iBooks - Alex Theory, who runs the iBooks on stage, said he uses two 1GHz iBooks to power the band's drums and overall feel of the music. Using Albeton Live, Reason and Pro Tools, Theory mixes and assigns beats to his iBook keyboard, changing beats on the fly depending on the mood of the crowd
Resolving hosts on my iBook - As I was setting up my test installs of Wordpress and Gallery2 last night something started to throw me for a loop. My iBook had a hostname set to "ibook", but it wouldn't resolve that to my server while using my laptop, I needed to type in "ibook.local". While on my pc, it would resolve as "ibook" but not as "ibook.local".
The Perfect Companion for Your Treo, iBook, PowerBook, or Xbox - The ideal gift for anyone who owns a Treo, PowerBook, iBook, or an Xbox--or who will own one once Santa visits--are O'Reilly's new flock of "Fan Books." These colorful little guides are the quick and fun way to get users acquainted with their new devices, lead them through the many features and capabilities, and show them tips and tricks that will make them instant experts
Apple iBook 12" Review (pics, specs) -- Time to Give Apple a Chance? - Being a diehard PC user for over 15 years, I had never considered switching to an Apple Mac or EVER using an Apple product. In fact I avoided using Quicktime as much as possible because I always thought anything made by them was a joke. I mean, my gosh, why won't Apple just give in and add a second mouse button? Besides, Macs are mainly for graphic designers, moviemakers, musicians or ignorant consumers who need a computer with training wheels, right? It turns out that I was the one who was ignorant and completely clueless in using the Mac OS until I recently acquired this new iBook G4 12-inch to satisfy my Mac curiousity and have enjoyed using it everyday since
iBook G4 Updates Portables Get a Speed Boost; AirPort Extreme Now Standard - In a clear effort to boost the appeal of its iBook family to holiday shoppers, Apple cranked up the clock speed on all three models, made AirPort Extreme standard across the line, cut the price of the entry-level model, and added a SuperDrive at the top of the line. Indeed, the inclusion of the SuperDrive in the top model is the only difference between the two high-end iBooks; therefore, we tested only the low-end and the high-end models for this review
School laptop program plagued by thefts - In late October, 2,800 Apple iBooks were given to the students at Miramar High School, one of four to participate in a pilot program run by the Broward County Public School District. Since then, seven laptops have been stolen from students walking home from school, two by force and five at gunpoint, said Miramar police spokesman Bill Robertson. No students were injured in the robberies
My Three ‘Books Revisited - The little iBook, now just amonth and a half short of its 2nd birthday, has, despite this model’s spotty reputation, been to date completely reliable with no issues at all. I’ve grown quite fond of it, and still love its glossy, white look.
iBook repair program may yield surprise upgrades - Apple Computer may begin substituting 700MHz logic boards for some 600MHz iBook models that are in need of repair, due to "unforeseen inventory constraints" of the 600MHz iBook logic board and G3 processor, AppleInsider has learned.
iBook, Power Mac 1.8GHz Benchmarks Slower Bus Speed Affects Single-Processor Power Mac’s Performance - As expected, the new 12-inch 1.2 GHz G4 iBook turned in numbers comparable to the 14-inch 1.2GHz G4 iBook we tested back in April of this year and the 10 percent bump to 1.33GHz for the new 14-inch iBook nudged performance up about as much you’d anticipate. The new Power Mac results were a bit more interesting
OS X Odyssey 666 - Underwhelmed By Panther On New iBook - she's right. Microsoft started this idiocy with its wretched "wizards." I suppose that Apple has chosen to ape Microsoft in trying to make switchers and newbies feel more at home with the setup assistants, et al., but I do wish there was a way to turn them off globally
iBook 14'' 1.33 GHz xBench - Gérald who's received his new iBook, sent us a xBench test of his machine.
iBook G4-1.2GHz ($994) - If you've been trying to get 90% or so of 12” PowerBook G4-1.33GHz performance for 63% of its cost, take another (or your first) look at the new iBook G4-1.2GHz. Performance-wise, this is not a “step down” from the mighty PowerBook any longer and it does save you lots of money.
Hack Your iBook: Aftermarket Bluetooth - Fortunately, if you find yourself in this situation, someone has posted a howto regarding the installation of a Bluetooth adapter inside your iBook. Thank God. Now we can all sleep better at night.
Apple ends optical drive enhancement program for iBooks - Apple Computer is ending a limited time offer that gave customers who own iBooks with a combo optical drive the opportunity to enhance their optical drive performance by swapping out their existing failed optical drive for a faster performing optical drive
The Road Warrior - - The iBook Speed Bump; Can PowerBook Updates Be Far Behind? - "In a column on Applelinks a couple of weeks ago, I predicted that some Apple laptop speed bumps could be expected before Christmas, probably sooner than later, and that clock speed numbers would likely be 1.8 GHz and 2 GHz G4 for the high end PowerBooks, which would logically imply 1.5 GHz for the 12-inch Little Al, 1.33 GHz for the 14-inch iBook, and 1.2 GHz for the entry-level 12-incher." I pretty well called it as far as the iBook is concerned, although it wasn’t much of a feat of clairvoyance
Apple Refreshes iBook Notebook Series -- Adds Speed and 802.11g (pics, specs) - Apple last week updated its iBook line of notebooks in preparation for sales for the holiday season. The processor speed was bumped up for each iBook and the price of the entry-level iBook with a 1.2GHz chip, DVD/CD-Burner combo drive and 12-inch screen was dropped to $999 from $1099. The midrange iBook comes with a 1.33GHz chip, combo drive and 14-inch screen and costs $1,299. Finally, the top tier iBook retails at $1,499 and can burn both DVDs and CDs (Apple calls it their "SuperDrive").
Apple Refreshes iBooks, Power Mac G5, Xserve RAID - Each new iBook model has begged the question: "Should I buy a PowerBook or an iBook?" The PowerBook line has been the professional workhorse, with more slots and options than the education- and consumer-directed iBook. But the iBook hasn't trailed far behind in speed and basic features, making it appealing to people who don't need the fastest processor and features such as a PC Card slot. Last week, Apple nudged the specifications of the latest iBook configuration closer to the current PowerBook lineup, forcing potential Mac laptop buyers to reevaluate the question
