iPodland: Microsoft's secret plan for getting Windows Media on the iPod goes awry - Sadly, Bill Gates had to inform his eager young intern that this wasn't really what he had in mind when he said that he needed to get "Windows Media on an iPod as soon as possible"

Washington Post Covers iPod Battery Ruckus - An anonymous reader sent in a link to ' Battery and Assault: When His iPod Died, This Music Lover Tackled Apple. Stay Tuned. ' in the Washington Post. The article (good reading even if you're familiar with the situation) has Apple reps being rather callous about the issue - I think it's a fairly reasonable assumption that if you spend several hundred dollars on a gizmo, it shouldn't be "disposable". A replacement battery for my cell phone cost $10; one for my cordless phone cost $10; Apple is presumably making a good deal of money on their $99 replacements.

iTunes Music Store vs. WalMart's download service: a head-to-head comparison - Talk about your self-sacrificing journalistic integrity. In the name of giving Mac users a glimpse into what it is to be a WalMart music downloader, I have laid out a full 88 cents, out my own pocket. Sure, I could have used that money for a down payment on a ham sandwich, but instead I blew that money just so that I can reliably report to readers that WalMart's music download service isn't likely to become the "WalMart of music download services". Rather than list what all is missing or inferior or more difficult in comparison to iTunes, I figured I'd create a head-to-head comparison chart to determine whether it would all be worth it to save eleven cents per download. WalMart even wins in some categories. So without further ado, here's a point-by-point comparison of iTunes vs. WalMart:

Christmas shoppers 'can't get enough of iPods' - Apple say that by October this year they had shipped more than 1.3 million iPods to countries around the world. Mike Khalfey, central buyer for electronics at John Lewis department stores, said so many people wanted an iPod they were having to take orders for delivery after Christmas

iPod as picture bucket - Most add-on devices don't tap into the iPods' gargantuan hard-drive storage capacities, which range from 10 to 40 gigabytes. One exception is Belkin's $99 Media Reader, which lets digital-camera users transfer photos from their flash-storage cards to their iPods

The perfect journalist's recorder - Sometimes I'm a bit slow on the uptake. It just dawned on me that an Apple iPod with Belkin's Voice Recorder is the ideal 21st century equivalent of a reporter's tape recorder

AOL Users Hear ITunes - Apple's music service now available via AOL Music. - America Online and Apple Computer announced on Thursday that AOL members who visit AOL Music can now click an ITunes button next to featured songs and launch the ITunes Music Store, where they can preview, purchase, and download the tracks to listen to on their computer or IPod

Steve Jobs Dismisses Wal-Mart & Dell, Offers Message To Artists - Steve Jobs gave an interview to USA Today concerning Apple's music strategy. According to the story resulting from that interview, Mr. Jobs dismissed Wal-Mart as a competitive threat, said that Apple had trounced Dell in digital music players, and perhaps most importantly, said that half of the downloads from the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) continue to be full albums

The iPod is the new sonic boom - Not only is Apple's portable digital music player flying from high-street shelves, it is also "the fastest-selling item being snapped up by internet shoppers", said the Observer . Its popularity is such, according to the Financial Times , that it "is in short supply in many markets, including the US and the UK"

iPod Remote Hack - Earlier this year I opened up my iPod remote control to see if there was a way I could hack it into the audio controls on my Gold Wing motorcycle

iPod Offerings, Part 2 - Last week I gave you Part 1 of my holiday gift suggestions for the iPod user(s) in your life, covering Apple accessories, music, software, cases, bags, and jackets. Part 2 provides you with the best in third-party iPod add-ons, car accessories, speakers, reading, and repair options. Give your favorite iPod user even more reason to love their iPod with one (or more) of these useful items

TechNewsWorld Looks At Why iTMS Flies High While Others Falter - Apple's iTunes Music Store may not have been the first online music store, and it certainly hasn't been the last, but it's been the only one to do it right , according to an article at TechNewsWorld

Apple responds to the recent Copyright Board of Canada decision - As a result of the recent Copyright Board of Canada's decision to add an importer and manufacturer levy on non-removable memory permanently embedded in digital audio recorders, Apple Canada announced that it is increasing prices for its iPod music devices effective December 13, 2003

Apple blasé about online music rivals - Jobs says he has no plans to lower prices or dramatically change iTunes to address the new threats. "We're going to continue on our winning strategy," he said in an interview.

Can Apple cement MPEG4 as THE new music standard? Here's one way to help... - Will Apple learn from past mistakes and leverage its superior music player and store to expand QuickTime and MPEG4? The key is making "iPod Compatible" a must-have feature for any music service and actively courting the other services to add the AAC format to their offering

24K Gold iPod on eBay - iPodlounger 'ExtraT' reports that eBay Germany has an auction listed for a 24K gold 5GB iPod

Gadgets make iPod more than an MP3 - Apple iPod owners eagerly await the time when they can "legally" fill their devices with music, a bunch of third-party accessories have been released that turns the gadget into something more than an MP3 player

Bill Clinton touts musical greats - Clinton described how his love for jazz informed the diverse musical selections programmed on his iPod, which include "pretty much everything that (piano legend) Oscar Peterson ever played that's on CD

iPod is favourite stocking thriller as internet shopping finally booms - It weighs less than a box of matches, can store 10,000 songs, and is set to become the coolest item in our Christmas stockings this year. The iPod may be just a hard-disk storage device, but it has become a cult consumer gift that has achieved a unique festive status over the past few days: it is the fastest-selling item being snapped up by internet shoppers

iTunes Music Store Downloads Top 25 Million Songs - Apple also announced that over $1 million of iTunes online gift certificates and allowances have been purchased since the features were added to the iTunes Music Store on October 16, 2003

iPod shortage: stroke of genius? - Twelve days til Christmas, and we officially have an iPod shortage. Now, it could just be an uninteresting piece of bad news (Apple made fewer than they should have). Or it could just be an uninteresting piece of good news (there is even greater demand than any company could reasonably have predicted). It could even be a bit of both. But something tells me that there's more to this than just a simply supply vs. demand imbalance. I mean, if I had a hot product on my hands and I wanted to make it even hotter for the holidays, the first thing I'd do is spread word that supply was running short

Five reasons not to buy an iPod - in truth, while the iPod rocks, it's not now, nor has it ever been, perfect for everyone.
We too have run our fair share of iPod-centric headlines--for a good reason. With about 1.5 million units sold, the iPod is the most popular MP3 player in the world, and it still makes other players look and feel inelegant in comparison. Don't get me wrong; it's still our favorite overall MP3 player .Although everyone can think of reasons why they want an iPod, I've decided to use this column to list a few reasons why not   to buy one

Cheaper Chiba holds its own against cute iPod - There are three things that keep me attached to this iPod: its superior sound, its capacity to hold all my digital music and automatically update additions and revisions when connected to the computer, and, finally, the aesthetics. But I'm not entirely faithful. Lately, I've been seen with a Rio Audio Chiba, which is a different kind of portable music player with its own special qualities

Home sweet iPod - Home on iPod lets you store the contents of your Home folder – your Dock and desktop preferences, documents and applications – on your iPod to take with you wherever you go. When you plug your iPod into another Mac running the updated Panther, it logs in to your personalised environment, just like on your own Mac. And when you get back to your own Mac you can update it with any changes you've mad

iPod player elevates portable music - Until the iPod’s arrival two years ago, the last big leap forward in portable music players for the masses was the introduction of the Sony Walkman about 20 years ago. In what seemed like an instant, the Walkman was omnipresent. Its name, in fact, became the shorthand for all makes and models of its imitators

iPod is favourite stocking thriller as internet shopping finally booms - It weighs less than a box of matches, can store 10,000 songs, and is set to become the coolest item in our Christmas stockings this year. The iPod may be just a hard-disk storage device, but it has become a cult consumer gift that has achieved a unique festive status over the past few days: it is the fastest-selling item being snapped up by internet shoppers

The Perfect iPod Accessory (inMotion) - The inMotion is an ultra-portable audio system design exclusively for the iPod. It runs on either AC, or battery. I will give you all the specs, but the most important thing to know is that this product creates a surprisingly good sound for either spoken word or music. I looked at this tiny box when I received it, slid my iPod in and cranked it up. It's not a boom box by any stretch of the imagination, but the sound was as good as any portable radio or tape player I ever heard

iPod makes the headlines - The Times yesterday declared Apple's market-leading music player "iconic", writing: "Not since Sony launched its Walkman in 1979 has a portable music player become such a cult consumer object."

Apple's iTMS Will Be the Last Man Standing - "These days, new digital music download services are becoming more common than spare AOL CDs. It seems like everybody is getting in the music download business. As more and more of these services pop up, the companies that run them are learning that there's no money in it unless you can tie it to a separate product or service. Editorial contributor Kevin Ledgister contributed the following editorial to osViews detailing why he believes that Apple's iTunes Music Store will rise above the competition."

Why the iPod rocks - The iPod initially works like a Discman. You've got your rewind, forward, pause and play keys. It's so user-friendly, Fred Flintstone could work this baby. Getting the songs in it, though, could pose a problem for him

iPod tops ESPN's list of "Favorite Things of the Year" - Is there anyone out there who doesn't love the iPod these days? In what could end up being the biggest case of contagious bandwagoning since wearing flannel shirts and forgetting to wash ones hair, ESPN is just the latest in a growing list of entities, most of whom have no connection with the computer or electronics industries whatsoever, to lavish praise (and drool) on the iPod

Red Hot Chili Peppers revolt against their management and finally show up in the iTunes Music Store - The Chili Peppers themselves never said anything about the embargo, leading me to think that they were simply being used as pawns in a battle being waged by Q Prime and Metallica. The mouthpiece for Q Prime, Mark Reiter, could do no better than to state that "our artists would rather not contribute to the demise of the album format."

Product of the Year - Apple CEO Steve Jobs persuaded the five major music labels and scores of independent labels to open their vaults (at least partially). Together they put more than 400,000 songs on sale at 99 cents each, or $9.99 for a typical album

iPod Gift Offerings, Part 1 - To help you decide on such a gift, the following are some of my favorite iPod-related products. (Unless noted, I've actually tried every item.) I've divided them into some logical categories, and included approximate U.S. prices for each

Jobs gathers no moss - Apple CEO Steve Jobs has revealed how difficult it was to convince music company executives to agree to support the iTunes Music Store. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jobs tells how, when Apple first approached the labels, 'they kicked us out. But we kept going back again and again.'

Man arrested in Cambs Police iPod email phone jam scam - email informing them that £399.99 would be taken out of their account to pay for an iPod music player they'd supposedly ordered. The email also advised recipients that they should call the number listed in the email if they had any queries. The snag was that the number did not belong to some ecommerce outfit, but to Cambridge Police HQ. Its phone lines were jammed.

Electric Image Offers Deals on Universe 5 Upgrades get discount; free iPod available with new purchases -
For new license purchases, Electric Image is also offering a free iPod, the portable music player and storage system from Apple. For those who purchase a new copy of Universe 5, Electric Image will include a free 40 GB iPod, which normally sells for $499. Universe sells for $1,295

Steve Jobs: The Rolling Stone Interview - Jobs' bet on digital music is a hugely risky move in many ways, not only because powerhouses such as Dell and Wal-Mart are gunning for Apple (and Microsoft will be soon, as well), but because success may depend on how well Jobs, a forty-eight-year-old billionaire, is able to understand and respond to the fickle music-listening habits of eighteen-year-olds in their college dorms

Neistat's Dirty Secret - So what really, is the point of this video? Sensationalism? Attention? General rabble rousing? A vent for anger over the fact that Apple wouldn't do anything about a situation that they were under no obligation to do anything about? Personally, I think they lashed out out of frustration; frustration that is hard for me to justify. The iPod was out of of warranty, end of story.

Apple iPod - Like all Apple products, the iPod is gorgeously designed, from its sleek, white styling to its compact build and large, easily readable screen. However, it's far from just a pretty face, and has many excellent features and a huge storage capacity. The 10Gb version alone lets you store 2,500 songs in MP3 format; the 40Gb model holds 10,000

iPod Speaker Stand Review - The iPod Speaker Stand is, not surprisingly, an iPod stand that works with all iPods, featuring a single 2 1/4" speaker in the base, which plugs into the headphone jack atop the iPod by way of an unobtrusive cable. It requires no batteries, being powered by the output of the iPod's headphone jack, which is able to drive the speaker to a very acceptable volume. The unit is crafted of hand-poured Gypsum and it fits the 1G and 2G iPods, that I have tested it with, like a glove

Soon: iPods For The Poor - "U.S. shipments of MP3 players will almost double in 2003 to over 3.5 million, and will continue to grow almost 50% per year for the next three years." Growth of 50% per year? Sweet. Considering that the iPod is already the market leader in both unit sales and revenue, provided Apple doesn't screw it up in some epic and monumental way, it ought to keep bringing in some serious moolah, iTMS performance notwithstanding.

Guy Suddenly Realizes He'll Never Have 10,000 Songs. - Just four days after purchasing a brand new 40 GB iPod, Mac user Scott Bauer realized he will never in his natural life own enough music to fill the device

Why the iPod will beat the printer company - For HP's sake they’d actually better be working on their own player and not re-branding someone else's player like DELL are. When you consider that the musical content available on these services is heading towards uniformity as record companies hedge their bets, and people who'd at least like to make a minor loss or perhaps just about break even on their music store business have standardised on the 99 cents a song model pioneered by Apple, the only differentiator in this market is in hardware players.

Getting A Handle On MP3 Players - The Apple iPod is the best known of the hard drive-based MP3 players. Apple was early to the party with an excellent device that, originally, only worked with the Macintosh. The current crop of iPods also works with Microsoft Windows

Apple iPod 20GB Review - Today I will be looking at Apple's illustrious MP3 player, the iPod. I think it's fair to say for any PC enthusiast, whether you're a fan of the Macintosh line of products or your general PC products, chances are you store music on your computer. If you are like me, and struggle to remember the last time you purchased a CD, then it would be nice to take your collection of songs from your computer and onto something a little more portable

Pearl Jam's website now features "iTunes Music Store" buttons - This month, Pearl Jam took its first baby steps of its post-record-label existence when it recorded the song "Man of the Hour" for a movie soundtrack, and then began selling physical copies of the single from its own website for five dollars. Although it took a few weeks, the song finally found its way to the iTunes Music Store yesterday, as the "New Music Tuesdays" email from Apple was so cheerful in informing me. Not a surprising move, considering the fact that Pearl Jam has been offering bootlegs of its recent concerts on a per-track basis in iTunes for some time

iPod as Digital Photographer's Best Friend - Based on what I've already discovered in Panther, I figured there had to be more possibilities than that. So I got my hands on the Belkin reader and started testing every scenario I could think of. Bottom line: my hunch was right. You can do a lot with this setup.

More Accurate (but, Admittedly, Less Sensational) Alternative Stencil Slogans for the ‘Neistat Brothers’

iPod Envy (In iPod Season): Part Deux - I still don't have an iPod. - OK, so, when am I going to get an iPod? I don' know. Christmas is coming up, but I've already got my 'Christmas Budget' funded and there's no money left for an iPod, not even a refurb. I suppose it'll have to wait until next year, which really isn't that far away. In the meantime, I'll keep scanning for a good deal and dream that some portly, red-suited stranger walks up to me and hands me an iPod just for being good this year. It tis the season, after all...

Maybe this little MP3 player is the bridge that will connect Apple and it's products to the rest of the world

More Buffoonery From The Media In QTFairUSe Coverage - Not everyone can be a geek, so perhaps we are being a tad too critical. Then again, PakNews.com was founded in 1991 by " Pakistani computer scientists and journalists ."
Be that as it may, it's interesting to see how much interest QTFairUse is generating around the world

iPod rivals 'don't get it' – Jobs - Jobs told the New York Times : "As technology becomes more complex, Apple's core strength of knowing how to make very sophisticated technology comprehensible to mere mortals is in even greater demand. " The Dells of the world don't spend money on design innovation. They don't think about these things."

iPod for photos - With the new voice recording features, iPod users can use a Belkin Voice Recorder to record and instantly review over 600 hours of lectures, interviews or notes on a 40GB iPod. Once the iPod, which is both Mac and Windows PC compatible, is connected to a computer, the WAV formatted voice notes are automatically synced with the computer just like songs and play lists are synced in the Apple's iTunes library. They can be edited or even sent to others via email

Business healthy for Apple’s iPod - “The whole thing was surreal,” said 33-year-old Diamond of flying over his handlebars and crashing into the concrete. “People were trying to help me, but I still had the earphones in and I couldn’t hear them at all.” Diamond’s iPod played the entire duration of his fall, despite the fact that a chunk of it broke off during the collision

Update: iPod's Dirty Secret Secret Revealed - I offered to mirror their video after their original webhost apparently pulled out, with one condition: that they link to, or otherwise inform users about, Apple's official $99 iPod battery replacement, since the video, as it stands, is incorrect: the iPod's battery is replaceable, and, on top of it, there's an official Apple program for $99

Exclusive: UK Apple chief’s iPod retail push - "Microsoft is trying to get Windows Media established as the format for digital media, but no-one in Hollywood is interested in that becoming any kind of standard; at the end of the day, it's the content creators who will drive the digital distribution format,"

iPod lands UK prize - Apple won a second BIMA (British Interactive Media Association) award last night – iPod won the Special Award for Hardware

QTFairUse, MyTunes, and Protected AAC Explained - These two applications have recently received a lot of attention due to their interactions with iTunes and the iTunes Music Store. Unfortunately, due to some very poor reporting across the internet, there are significant misconceptions about how these programs actually work. In fact, one article claims that you could now download songs for free from the iTunes Music Store. (This is not true.)

Apple adds 'New Music Tuesdays' tracks and exclusives to iTunes Music Store - including music from Puddle of Mudd, Counting Crows, Korn, Dixie Chicks, Rage Against the Machine, Michael Bublé, Nick Cannon, Cee-Lo & Timbaland, and more. iPod named Stereophile's Editor's Choice and Budget Product of the Year - In its December 2003 issue, Stereophile magazine has named the iPod as the Editor's Choice and Budget Product of the Year. Our informant, Bill S. notes that the Editor's Choice 'usually goes to $30K CD players and so forth

iPods And The Two Towers - *nix writes "Haven't seen any postings anywhere about this, so it may well be old news by now. I just finished watching part of the LOTR Two Towers extended bonanza dvd, and apparently at one point they were using iPods to transport Weta digital work from a point in London that had a fat pipe to wherever Jackson was actually staying, which had no real connection to speak of. I think that's pretty nifty.

No iPod for me, thanks - Update* As Netsloth pointed out in the comments, you can buy a 3rd party battery for about $50. There is a lot of discussion of that and Apple's new $99 replacement plan

The Media Knows Not Of What It Speaks Concerning iTMS DRM Issues - According to some testing done by C|Net, the resulting file is not of much use in its resulting form. All of the header information in the original AAC file is lost, and all that is left is the raw AAC data, which will not play in most media players.

The Burton AMP Pack offers iPod integration - The Burton Amp Pack integrates an iPod control system using SOFTswitch technology, which allows the iPod to be controlled through a soft, flexible control pad built into the pack’s shoulder strap

Hacker Drills Hole in iTunes Security Blanket - If enthusiasm for the pay-per-tune business were dulled by hackers, no tears would be shed in some corners of the Internet. "We don't think that digital rights management is a good deal for consumers," Greg Bildson, COO of the online file-sharing service LimeWire, told TechNewsWorld. "Paying 99 cents for digitally restricted songs robs the consumer of usability. DRM will always be a target for hackers."

The company's recent survey called TEMPO indicates that the number of paying downloaders doubled in the first half of 2003, with an estimated 10 million users forking over cash for tunes

Dell Unveils Its iPod Kryptonite - The biggest difference between the iPod and the DJ, besides the classic difference between Beauty and the Beast, is in their respective music-software services. Musicmatch is my favorite Windows-based online music service—that's like saying a prostate exam is my favorite invasive procedure

Delete all tracks from an iTunes' playlist and the Library - If you want to delete all tracks in an iTunes playlist, and erase them from your disk completely, you can't just choose the command 'Clear,' as this will only remove the songs from the plyalist, not delete the songs from the library altogether. The quickest way I found to do both is:

iPod's Dirty Secret Revealed - The Neistat brothers have taken it upon themselves to 'redecorate' iPod posters with their public service announcement which reads; iPod's Unreplaceable Battery Lasts Only 18 Months. A QuickTime video of their efforts has been posted at

iPod Guerilla Anti-Marketing - doggo writes "A disgruntled iPod owner is pursuing a guerilla campaign against Apple because of his iPod's dead battery six months out of warranty. "At that price, you might as well go get a new one"" Except that from iPodBattery.com you can get a replacement for $50 and install it yourself. I've had my iPod for just over two years now and its battery still works great.

Griffin to release iTalk - iPod voice recorder - Based on my conversations with a Griffin Technology representative at the Mac Expo London, I have discovered Griffin Technology is about to release a new product, called the iTalk. The iTalk is to be a device similar to Belkin's Voice Recorder, but with more advanced functionality

What secrets could such a simple device possible harbor?

Feel Free to Jack Into My IPod  - During his regular evening walk, software executive Steve Crandall often nods a polite greeting to other iPod users he passes: He easily spots the distinctive white earbuds threaded from pocket to ears.

Get into iPod's groove - Apple's iTunes/iPod strategy is an odd one — the flip side of the old "razor/razor blade" marketing strategy. In this case Apple is giving away the razor blades (songs and software) to get people to buy the razors (iPods). Is this innovative marketing or a suicide attempt?

iTunes' locked music unlocked - Jon Lech Johansen, aka DVD Jon is best known for his work with DeCSS, which allowed Linux users to view CSS protected DVDs

Apple Needs a DJ iPod - The iPod is great and everything but the addition of a few software features would make it the ultimate DJ tool with the possibility of displacing vinyl even soon. In Goodbye Turntables - The New DJ Revolution: MP3J's (and iPods) J.Love discusses some of the feature he wants to see in a DJPod:

Why Apple is tuning in - Time magazine, famed for its access to the usually private Steve Jobs and for getting the break on big Apple stories, such as the announcement of the flat-panel iMac, has given the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) the accolade of the Coolest Invention of 2003

Parental advisory: Steve Jobs is stealing your kids at ipodrocks.com - I guess the deals with tragically hip Pepsi, AOL, and McDonald's weren't enough, so now we've got ipodrocks.com.  I'm not sure yet what the strategy is for driving traffic to this new site, but Apple's target demographic for doing so couldn't be any clearer: teenagers and college kids.
