Retired: 10/6/03 ... Current Page

Below you will find a list of links that have been culled from around the Net relating Macs and their use in the creative professions. Like our other 'Hub' pages, this one is intended as a one stop launching point. New news links will be added to the top of each area. If you have a news item relating to the use of Macs in creative field, mail it to us and we will add it.

Susan Meiselas - She configures these projects on an informally distributed network of not so gently used Macs. “I’ve used Macs forever,” says Meiselas. “And if you visited my studio, you’d see all the various former lives of Apple computers. I did ‘Dead Birds…Revisited’ on my Power Mac G3.”

Hans Zimmer - Learning About Orchestras - “ Today, it’s amazing what you can do on a PowerBook,” he says. “It’s a more democratic system again. You don’t have to have hundreds of thousands of dollars. You just need to have some good ideas and be able to put them into action. And you have to have talent and musicianship.”

Apple - Pro/Music - Richard Devine - For sound design, composition, remixing and producing, Devine uses everything he can get his hands on. “I use Logic Audio quite a bit, Reaktor, Supercollider, Cycling 74’s Max/MSP and Pluggo, GRM Tools, CDP, Soundhack, Soundmaker, Bias Peak, Metasynth… Kyma.” He has a full ProTools system at his studio, with a hard-disk recording and mastering setup, a dual-processor Power Mac G4 with a SuperDrive and two top-of-the-line Apogee D/A converters

Apple - Pro/Music - Building Music for the Movies - If you listen to any dense piece of music — which is most of it — the density comes from my ability to freely experiment and play on the computer myself. I develop ideas of this against this against this against this. With the Mac, I have an experimental freedom that’s not possible unless you have unlimited amounts of money and unlimited amounts of time to bring in players to experiment and experiment and experiment.”

Apple - Pro/Music - Jack Dangers - “The first album I did for Consolidated, ‘Friendly Fascism,’ was edited using the very first version of Sound Design,” says Dangers. “That was the first time I’d ever used a Macintosh. “ Back then, Consolidated were using a lot of Emax. They had just gotten into the Macintosh, but their first album had been done on an Alesis sampler. So, it was pretty lo-fi. “ But then after that, they stepped up to using the Mac,” he adds.

Apple - Pro/Photo - John Isaac - Although he was equipped to process his photos in the field, Isaac held off at the request of his editors, who wanted raw files. “I didn’t edit much, but using Photoshop, I made image files and contact sheets with captions. Then I wrote the files to 10 or 15 CDs on my iBook, which made them much easier to review,” he says

Alias Reports 25% Of US Maya Sales Are For Mac, Maya On The G5 Is "Fast" - According to the company, Mac sales account for some 25% of Maya sales in the US. In Alias's worldwide sales, Mac OS X accounts for some 20% of Maya sales, a slightly lower figure, but very respectable. This could be why the company made a simultaneous release of Maya 5 for all the platforms it supports, including Mac OS X. Previous versions of Maya were released later on the Mac than on Windows, Irix, and the other platforms Maya supports.

Apple - Pro/Video - AJ Schnack - “We depend on our iMacs and iBook and PowerBook every day,” says Schnack. “Gigantic” was filmed with a Sony PD 150 DV-camcorder; the director used built-in camera sound along with lavaliere and boom mics. Editing for the entire movie and its trailer was done with Final Cut Pro.

Apple - Pro/Video - Ocean Future - The moment Julius Braunschweig sat down in front of the Mac to begin editing a television documentary on sharks for Jean-Michel Cousteau, he ran into a problem.

3-D Product Design - “Because of the branding we were doing, this was of particular interest to me because we were doing a lot of manipulation of found imagery. He brought that capability to us — to show us how it could be done on Macs — and from that point, it started kind of a snowball effect.”

Inside Endorphin.com: Mac Made Videos On The Web - Endorphin Productions' Web site has always been a popular spot for Net surfers looking for views of California, and the site's high resolution content has been featured on Apple's QuickTime Web site. Little wonder, QuickTime and other Apple technologies are central to the creation of EPI's breathtaking movies

Country group Lonestar switches, with Mac dealer's help - "Lonestar, a once Windows-using band, has made the switch to the Mac," Lucas Leverett, MacAuthority's art and promotions director, told MacCentral. "After they showed their enthusiasm for the Mac, and upon realizing how thrilled they were with their switch, we decided to involve them in our new billboard ad campaign."

Making the Cut: Producing a TV Series on the Mac - It's a familiar story: a small faction of dedicated Macintosh users struggling to be heard in a Windows-dominated office. It doesn't seem to matter whether your company is selling life insurance or producing TV shows, it's always an uphill and frequently impossible battle. Once in a great while, circumstances can come together in such a way that real changes can start taking place

Just midway between MusikMesse in Germany and summer NAMM 2003 in Nashville, audio companies are spawning new developments for Mac OS X daily. An online search or visit to sites such as Harmony Central or OS X Audio reveals an amazing candy store of tasty new AudioUnits plugins.

Apple - DVD Studio Pro - Stories - George Spyros - Filmmaker George Spyros has distinguished himself both as an award-winning director and as someone who can use "creative" and "corporate" to describe the same production. That talent found him behind the camera recently, directing hours of digital video footage for Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Inc.
The project, authored in DVD Studio Pro , resulted in nearly 17,000 replicated DVDs for Pfizer

Apple's invite to architects - Apple's attendance at the show comes as architects look at the company with renewed interest, tempted by Mac OS X's Unix underpinning

Apple - Pro/Design - Keith Hillebrandt - Logic and Peak for Sound Design Today, when Hillebrandt designs his crazy, droney, tweaky and atmospheric mood-touching sounds and soundscapes, he relies on a Power Mac running Logic and Peak. "Peak is my main program. It is always the front end and the back end of my sounds

Apple - Hot News - Liam Lynch - Lynch spent months shooting and editing skits and music videos, including segments showing how he cuts his own videos in Final Cut Pro and how he assembled the menus and content for the DVD using DVD Studio Pro . He also uses Poser for animation

Revolution in Movie Affairs - In case you think the DV thing is just another fad where computer makers are selling dreams of Hollywood to starry-eyed film students, consider that on the professional level, it's no less revolutionary: Oscar winning editor Walter Murch ("Apocalypse Now," "The English Patient") switched from the industry standard Avid to Apple G4s with Final Cut Pro (FCP) for Cold Mountain , the new feature he is editing for director Anthony Minghella. According to Murch , FCP gives him more creative flexibility and power than Avid for half the cost

Apple Seeks Submissions For Eighth Annual Apple Design Awards - Apple also sent out a letter to Apple Developer Connection members inviting them to submit their products for inclusion in the Apple Design Awards. As mentioned before, the prizes for the Apple Design Awards include a 17" PowerBook with a 23" Cinema Display HD, as well as a trophy and the right to advertise the Award

Just Switched To Mac, What Sequencer Should I Use? , Cubase SX? Cubase SL? MOTU DP? Protools? - Hey everybody. I just recently switched from a PC to my wonderful new PowerMac duel 1.25GHz G4. While on PC I used Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and Sonar for all my recording/sequencing. Now that I'm on a mac, what should I look into? I seem to have noticed that the big players are Protools 6, MOTU Digital Performer, and Cubase. Any others I should look into?

Apple Design Awards at WWDC 2003 - Announcing the Eighth Annual Apple Design Awards, now expanded into two contests-the Apple Design Awards for Application Software and the Apple Design Awards for QuickTime Content

Apple - Pro/Photo - Seamus Conlan - After capture, Conlan's workflow runs through a Mac. "I travel with a PowerBook G4, which is absolutely beautiful - 30 gig drive, burns CDs, perfect." Conlan uses the Mac to track and edit in the field, even as a kind of video hotplate. "Generally with digital - as with film negs - there is a color balance problem. But really all that I do is alter the color balance in Photoshop using a small program I developed around the automatic actions. I basically select the folder and allow Photoshop to put one touch of yellow on every image, just to warm them up slightly, because they are generally a little cold when they come out of my Canon camera."

Apple - Pro/Photo - James Nachtwey - The working procedures of our agency, VII, are based on decentralized production. Each photographer independently produces their own scans, tones them and transmits them to the agency. Having our filing cabinets in cyberspace saves us a lot on rent and staff and keeps our operation lean and affordable. Computers come into play every bit as much, even though most of our pictures originate on film. In the field I carry a PowerBook G4, and in my studio I use a dual processor Power Mac G4 and an Epson 2200 printer.

Apple - Hot News - Micah Herman - Editing the multi-lingual dialog scenes proved to be a very tricky process for Micah, so he chose to work alongside dialog editor Tobias Fueter. "I ended up running out of time in my Avid slot, so I just bought a PowerBook G4 and I started doing my editing in Final Cut Pro when I wasn't able to get into the Avid suite," he says

Apple - Pro/Photo - Eli Reed - Reed ended up worrying less about capturing digital images than about losing them as they jumped the synapses between camera, memory card, Digital Wallet and PowerBook. "I was concerned they would be too easy to lose, but that really wasn't a problem. The Digital Wallet was a good way to hold a lot of images without carrying a lot of cards. So I just downloaded the images when I had a moment between locations," he says

Apple - Pro/Photo - Kevin Gilbert - Gilbert gave his method a timed test of unprecedented scope recently when he served both as workflow architect and participating photographer for "A Day in the Life of Africa," a transcontinental shoot with 100 participating photographers and a 24-hour deadline. "The Day in the Life folks needed to make sure they knew what they were doing with a hundred great photographers, most of whom had not shot digital," says Gilbert. "We brought in Power Mac G4s and Apple Cinema Displays with backup FireWire drives and CD burners, then worked through the whole system as a team."

Apple - Hot News - Winter NAMM 2003 - Virtual instruments and samplers, sound modules and effects plug-ins, USB-connectible controllers and mixers, Moog modeling plug-ins, and iGuitars were all the buzz of this year's Winter NAMM. And there were plenty of new arrivals for Mac OS X .

Apple - Hot News - DV Expo West - For two evenings, a film festival after the conference showcased short films, most cut on Macs, by up-and-coming film directors. We caught up with several of the film makers to find out what tools they used to make their film, and how Macs helped in the process.

Apple - Shake - Lord of the Rings - WETA is simultaneously producing all three films in the trilogy: "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King." To date, Shake has been instrumental in helping WETA tackle more than 1,000 compositing-intensive effects shots on the projects

Cut to the chase  - Editors tend to get in a groove with a system they're comfortable with and stay there for decades. For most, it was a slow and painful transition from mechanical splicers to the computerized, nonlinear systems of which Avid has become something of a de facto standard. In the past year or two, however, Avid has been fending off parries from the low-cost challenger Final Cut Pro, which actually has gained some ground in the areas of television, commercials and trailers. Now it has cleared another major hurdle -- its first big-league feature. Esteemed editor Walter Murch sent ripples of surprise through the editing community when he decided to use the system to cut Anthony Minghella's "Cold Mountain," due out Christmas 2003, for Miramax

Apple - Hot News - Sinch - nstead of connecting the Viditar to an amplifier, Smith plugs it directly into the FireWire port of his 800 MHz PowerBook G4 which he brings onstage with him. While the band plays, he triggers videos using buttons on the Viditar neck, which call up any of 128 individual QuickTime files per song

Laagan, Tikawali style - An Apple Macintosh computer, a digital movie camera and five young boys huddled in front. There's nothing striking about the scene, except that the boys are from a non-descript Haryana village, and they are working on what will be the third movie written, shot and edited entirely on their own.

Moviemaking capability has gone Hollywood - I've now made dozens of movies with my Macs and I have to tell you, folks, the state of moviemaking on a Mac has improved a zillionfold in 10 years. Whenever I show a movie I've created on my Mac, someone invariably asks how much it costs and how hard it is

Apple - Hot News - Coldplay - All four members of Coldplay have PowerBooks and iPods, and their sound engineers have PowerBooks as well. "There are a lot of PowerBooks lying around," says Berryman. "They're such amazing machines. Even for just watching DVDs on the plane. It's brilliant

Apple - Pro/Video - Dave Gare - Although influenced by the sheer capacity of the format, the company's move to DVD was ultimately triggered by customer requests for media choice and meaningful interaction. "For corporations, there is truly useful interactivity in DVD," says Gare. Reason enough for any business to go there and with DVD Studio Pro, easy enough to do

Apple - Pro/Video - "The Rules of Attraction" - Enter Final Cut Pro and Cinema Tools, applications that smoothed the delivery of a movie that matched Writer/Director Avary's vision while meeting Producer Avary's form-fitting budget. The QuickTime-based architecture of Final Cut and Cinema Tools allowed Avary and editor Sharon Rutter to shuttle freely between film and DV while shooting and editing to achieve complex effects, including rewinds and split-screen, required by a uniquely non-linear script. These capabilities, according to Avary, "worked like lightning and saved hours a day."
And with a full editing suite in his home, on a Power Mac G4, Avary could edit any time

Paul Mac-cartney - A 'secret' Paul McCartney Web site blocked to Mac users is now open, thanks to action from the man himself

Digital Killed the Video Star - Thanks to Apple, more and more people are exploring digital video, but I wasn't sure if people realized how far we've come in such a short time. The whole art form has been liberated and simplified. I recently set up a Bryce server farm in my house to render animation between three Macs and a PC. It took about 30 minutes of setup time. Six years ago, that type of computing power would have been nearly impossible without several SGI machines and $1,000,000. Apple has opened the door to new filmmakers who have no idea how lucky they are

Macs making music: A Producer's journey - David Ellefson has been a professional musician, performer, recording artist and songwriter for the last 25 years. The Right to Tinker - Playing around with computers helped create the Apple computer. But Hollywood wants to outlaw the practice

Apple's Big Bite - Since going out on my own earlier this year, I've gained a keen appreciation for systems that are easy to set up and use in all sorts of places, such as home offices, location sites, etc. Laptop-based DV edit systems have made this easier, but still leave you longing for the missing features and better monitoring. This time around, I'm actually reviewing a combination of several products from Apple, which all happen to work ideally together for the budget-minded videographer
